About Us
In 1984 Henry Matoza Jr., a Journeyman electrician for a large electrical company based in Oakland and affiliated with Local Union #6 in San Francisco, successfully passed the California State License Board’s exam to become a General Building Contractor. He’s worked on construction crews of every sort, accelerating to journeyman level, in every position he’s held, since he was sixteen years old. Having mastered all phases of construction, from foundations to framing or the fine art of finish carpentry and tile mason; he knew instinctively that he would one day, run his own company.
Henry and Ragen

Henry Matoza Construction began as a one-man show, working side jobs in his free time; mostly nights and weekends. Within two years, he quit his job as an electrician to become a full-time builder-contractor in order to keep up with the demand on his talents and to run his three-man crew, full-time.

In 1991, he hired twenty-two year old, Eric McFarlin, who was an outstanding finish carpenter. Eric was a natural - raised by a father who is a master craftsman in finish cabinetry; he was bred to be the best. Eric is Matoza Construction’s lead foreman, construction supervisor and estimator. His journeyman skills include all phases of construction; he can build your house from the ground up, performing each trade to perfection. His specialty though is predictable, like his dad, he is a master of carpentry.

The Crew

In 1996, the company became a family affair; Henry hired his eighteen year old son, Eli, as a full time employee the summer after his high school graduation. Eli was another “natural” having worked on his dad’s jobsites since he was twelve. Eli is a journeyman in all trades, but specializes in electric, tile and granite. Eli’s step-father owns the largest marble/granite/tile store and construction company in Palm Desert. Raised in both homes 50% of the year, gave Eli the unusual opportunity to have two mentors training him; the result? an all around master craftsmen.

The following year, Henry hired his cousin Donny Matoza, another master of many trades. You name it, Donny does it; as with all our employees, he was trained in all trades with equal aplomb. And that rounds out the core of our company, as it stands today… that is, save one exception, the other owner, Penelope Smith or “Penny” to everyone who knows her.

In 1998, Penny began working for the company part-time as a management consultant and keeping the books, while day-trading stocks in the morning and being a single mother at night. Penny was no stranger to business; an entrepreneur since the age of twenty-four, she’s owned two restaurants, an import/export company and a telemanagment company along with quite a bit of consulting. She brought to the table the one ingredient the company was missing, organization!

Henry and Penny

Penny grew up in a family of realtors and several generations of lawyers. Her childhood saw many a summer working with her parents repairing the deferred maintenance and then remodeling the homes they’d bought for investment. Penny is part of the design team. She is involved in all the projects from inception, to insure that the client is being heard and understood. She’ll lend much knowledge to the design process, particularly where cost is concerned.

Our company currently employs nine full-time employees and one part-time bookkeeper. Our crews consist of at least two or three journeymen level tradesmen and a laborer. Our lead carpenters are Brian Frostad, Richie Greene, and Rob Simpkin all have a minimum of twelve or more years of experience in carpentry and other trades. Our subcontractors feel like our employees, as most of them have been working with Matoza Construction for many years. Our standards of constructions and missions are the same, to give our clients the very best quality in workmanship, regardless of the budget.
